In 2011, I was lead author of an article in Information, Communication & Society that found, based on a representative survey of 2,500 Americans, that regardless of whether the participants were married or single, those who used social media had more close confidants."
Remember the fear when people started using the Internet that people would become addicted and stop socializing? Well, didn't happen.
This article also reports that they "found that the average user of a social networking site had more close ties than and was half as likely to be socially isolated as the average American."
Yay! We're doing ok!
Internet Collective Action is people organizing in a nonhierarchical manner to accomplish a particular goal. The reward is in the doing, and how much or how little anyone participates is completely voluntary, depending on their abilities and commitment to the goal.
